What is PREcip?

PREcip is a weather forecasting service that pushes practical and actionable forecasts to you via SMS twice daily. Your day is tough enough already – don’t let the weather make it tougher. We want to take the thought out of planning for the weather.

We message you once early in the AM to tell you what your commute will be like, and to recommend what to wear and to bring to get you through your day. We message you again in the mid-afternoon to let you know about any weather impacts to your PM commute, to recommend what you’ll need to wear or to bring for the evening, and we give you an initial plan for the next morning, since we know some of you choose outfits and plan commutes the night before.

How does PREcip work?

After registering at app.precipweather.com, and saving our number as "PREcip Actioncast" in your phone's contacts, you'll receive SMS's from your PREcip Team that provide practical and actionable weather forecasts based on the location you input on the website. We come to you with the weather, we tell you what you need to look out for, and we recommend what you should do to make sure the weather doesn’t disrupt your day.

In future iterations, we will use geolocation and location services to determine your forecasts.

What makes PREcip different than other weather services?

PREcip is different than other weather services in two major ways.

1. We de-emphasize the technical detail or generic comments common in most forecasts, which sound fancy but don’t provide you with actionable information. At PREcip we meaningfully state what the weather is going to be, and what you should do about it to get through your day. For example, we’re not going to tell you more than an inch of rain is expected today. We’re going to tell you there will be heavy rain, we’ll tell you the start and stop times, and we’ll recommend you bring waterproof shoes, an umbrella, and that you plan for extra time during your commute. We do the weather thinking for you.

2. With PREcip it’s not on you to look up the weather. We push the weather and our recommendations to you so you’re not caught off guard. We send SMS’s at action points in your day, like early in the AM before you leave the house, and mid-afternoon as the day is winding down and afternoon commutes and activities are starting up.

Our goal at PREcip is to take the stress and thought out of planning for how the weather affects your day-to-day. We come to you via SMS and we’ll tell you what the weather will be and what actions you should consider. After all, what good is knowing the weather if you don’t know what to do about it?
